Before The Bahamas' independence in 1973, expatriate artists depicted work that reflected the Bahamian landscape and lifestyle from their perspective. Artists like Gaspard Le Marchant Tupper who painted watercolor landscapes in the 1800s, Hildegard Hamilton & Hartwell Leon Woodcock who captured Bahamian life using different mediums and styles in the early 1900s. These historical paintings give us a glimpse of how art in The Bahamas began.
