Peter Bizzell

Peter Bizzell

Peter Bizzell (b. Caernarvon, N. Wales, U.K. 1944) has been a practicing veterinarian in The Bahamas since his arrival in 1970, working in Freeport, Nassau, and Eleuthera. He is a self-taught artist who developed skills in drawing, painting, woodwork, metalwork, and pottery during his school years. Although he considered attending art school at sixteen, his great love for animals led him to study veterinary medicine at Bristol University, where he graduated in 1968.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bizzell rekindled his artistic dreams and began a new career as an artist, starting with a series of minimalistic striped watercolors on paper, inspired by the work of Agnes Martin. He then progressed to paintings on panels and canvas, using grids, stripes, glazes, and geometric shapes. Other artists who have influenced him include Josef Albers, Sol LeWitt, Paul Klee, Bridget Riley, and Sean Scully.

Bizzell’s focus is on colors and their interaction and influence on each other, both as opaque colors painted next to each other and as translucent and transparent glazes superimposed upon one another. He is also interested in the colors of shadows and the creation of luminosity by carefully juxtaposing different hues and tones. His paintings are bright and vibrant, reflecting the beauty of Bahamian skies and seas. They are carefully crafted geometric abstracts that use multiple layers of glazes to add depth, perspective, and luminosity.
